  “A high-desert place often described as the Nile River Valley of the West,” says author Janet Marugg of American Falls, pointing out the paradox of this southeast Idaho town, population 4,100. A city on the move, American Falls has seen more than its fair share of change, especially after the entire town was moved to accommodate the American Falls dam in the 1920s. Although the dam did not bring the prosperity it promised then, American Falls today is an oasis of year-round recreation.

Although rising gas prices may seem like highway robbery, stagecoach passengers on Idaho’s frontier had to contend with not only the dangers inherent in the backcountry, but the likelihood of being robbed. The discovery of gold naturally begot opportunists looking for easy targets along frontier stage routes. Take a look back at some of Idaho’s most notorious and notable stagecoach robbers.
