Share your Idaho with the rest of us. We are always looking for informative, entertaining writing and great photography about Idaho topics. Rather than objective, open-ended reporting, we look for a narrative: a nonfiction story with a definite beginning and end, at least some of which is told in first person. Dig into your memories, bring out your boxes of old photos, brush up on the stories you heard yesterday and the ones you heard as a child. Tell us about your background, your family, your experiences.  We consider submissions on all topics except religion, partisan politics, and business enterprises unless they’re extremely unusual.  We do NOT accept jokes, poetry, or fiction (except for our annual fiction contest).

Publication Requirements
After a story has been approved for publication, we MUST have the following items in-house before the story will be scheduled for publication:

1. The completed story

2. Accompanying story photos (please do NOT embed digital images in a document; attach them as separate jpg files)

3. Brief captions for all photos

4. Photo credits (name of the photographer and/or institution who furnished each photograph)

5. Author’s photo and 50± word bio

Feature Article Word Limit
Roughly 1,000-3,000 words

Fictional works and creative nonfiction may be submitted to our annual Fiction Writing Contest, deadline Jan. 31. Be sure all such works are clearly marked as fiction. They should not have been previously published. Science fiction is not eligible for this contest.

IDAHO magazine buys one-time rights to articles, which may include both print and electronic versions. This does not require the written exchange of copyright from freelancers to the magazine. When we are asked for permission to reprint articles, the requests will be forwarded to the author. We reserve the right to edit and rewrite to comply with our style or space requirements.

We accept proposals and unsolicited manuscripts. Accepting a manuscript does not guarantee publication. We prefer electronic submissions, and prefer that they be sent in Microsoft Word, if possible. Hard copies must be typed and if you want mailed materials returned, include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Do not send an original or sole copy. We are not responsible for unsolicited manuscripts or photos.

Some of our best stories come from photographers’ submissions. IDAHO magazine considers photographs that accompany stories submitted for publication. Each issue, the best and most appropriate image submitted is chosen for the cover.

Please send photos in digital format if at all possible. Include a brief description of the subject matter (names, dates, locations, activities) for captions, and each photo’s photographer should be named. If the image is being lent by an organization or individual, please list the names so proper credit can be given.

Photography Specs

• We prefer digital format images if at all possible

• High-resolution JPG or PNG images are best, although other formats may be acceptable

• Ideally, digital images should be 300 dpi for a photo that would print at about 8″ x 10″

• Attach them to an email or use a free bulk service like GoogleDrive, WeTransfer, etc.

There’s no such thing as having your information to us too early.

Guidelines

1. Your event MUST take place in Idaho. Ad space is available for events taking place in any other state.

2. Any event open to the public for a reasonable cost is eligible for a listing on the calendar. We define a “reasonable cost” as something a family could afford to attend with their children. Admission costs need to be under $10 for adults, $5 for children, and things that are free for kids are even better.

3. More costly events may be considered if they are community projects or fundraisers. Write to Les Tanner with inquiries if your event is more costly but you think it might qualify.

Calendar Submission Deadlines
All event details, contact information and photos are due on or before the fifteenth of the month, two issues prior to publication. Event publication is first-come, first-served. Publication is not guaranteed, because of space limitations.
