“Where’s the rest of the store?” I asked the lady behind the counter at the department store in downtown Boise.

The lady’s eyes widened in surprise. “What do you mean? There is no other part of the store. This is it.”

It was November 1980, and I had just moved from San Francisco with my new husband, who was from Boise. Before marrying, I had never heard of Boise. I didn’t know where Idaho was.
