Women in White

IDAHO magazine’s March 2020 cover story by Linden Bateman, “Women in White,” celebrated the centennial of women’s suffrage as part of the annual Idaho Day observance that he founded as a state congressman. For this year’s Idaho Day, Linden and David Nipper helped Idaho Falls filmmaker Paul Jenkins put together the following short film, which is full of arresting historical images of women in white.

On the Idaho Centennial Trail

Idahoan Ron Whittaker is one of a relatively few people who have hiked the entire Idaho Centennial Trail, which extends about nine hundred miles through the state from Nevada to the Canadian border. He didn’t do it all in one piece, though—it required multiple trips over seven years from him to complete the route. Ron has written a book about this “life-changing” experience, The Search for the Flat Ness Monster (available at Amazon and Barnes and Noble). Following are numerous segments of his excursion that he recorded on video. The entire trail is not depicted but it’s a good selection, offered here in geographical (rather than chronological) order, from south to north. Idaho William

Jessica Butterfield took her young son William around Idaho to teach him about the state. All along the way they made videos. She wrote a story called “Idaho William” about the experience in our March 2014 issue, and you can view a composite of those videos and her story, especially made for IDAHO magazine.
